A Kamloops lawyer known for his expertise in legal marijuana matters is glad to see the Canadian Senate back the bill to legalize recreational marijuana.
Shawn Buckley says he was pleased to see Bill C-45 get past the second reading.
As for what’s next?
“Now it goes into committee. So that doesn’t really tell us how long its going to be stuck in committee, and whether or not we have any hope of meeting the July deadline. But at least it’s progress, that it’s gone into committee and can move towards the third reading later on.”
Buckley says at this point, he’s skeptical the July 1st legalization deadline is going to happen.
“The Senate is aware that municipalities and provinces were working towards that deadline. So I think it would be ideal if they would try and honour that.”
Bill C-45 was referred to the Senate back in November of 2017, and if it goes through, would fulfill one of the main Liberal government campaign promises.
