The Thompson Nicola Regional District has declared a local state of emergency for area “M”.
This is an area encompassing Nicola Lake, Stump Lake, just north of Merritt and north to just south of Kamloops.
TNRD Chair John Ranta,
“I signed a local state of emergency for electoral area “M” in the Merritt area, one of the two electoral areas down there. Essentially, because of flooding challenges down there, you’ve got the need to go on to private property to be able to armour some areas with rip rap and that sort of thing.”
Cindy Coehlo is one of the Stump Lake residents that had been calling on officials to declare a local state of emergency.
“That’s good news, except I mean, I think the premise to us is the local state of emergency would be to let water out of the lake.”
She says homes on the south end of Stump Lake are in the most immediate danger.
