Its a matter of safety according to the City of Kamloops as the South Thompson River keeps rising.
Crews removed the railings before closing the pier at Riverside Park today.
“Just from an infrastructure perspective, the railings on that pier can get debris entangled in it, so we take that out just to avoid any damage to the pier.”
Utility Services Supervisor Greg Wightman says, its likely the water will top the pier over the next several days.
“We’re watching the entire city right now, we’re monitoring our forecasts, our data from both rivers, the Overlanders bridge, right now, no areas of concerns outside of Riverside Park in the immediate forecast, but that could change at a moment’s notice.”
Crews will also be turning off pathway lighting from the Riverside Park pier to Sandman Centre, and covering catch basins in low-lying areas with large flood protection bags to prevent river water from backing up onto roadways.
