A few classrooms across the Kamloops-Thompson School District will pilot a new reporting system in the new year.
Instead of merely a letter grade, report cards will have more information on how a student is doing.
Director of Instruction Lisa Carson says there won’t be much of a difference, but there will be more descriptive feedback.
“It’s not about this is what your child is, it’s about here’s where we’re going and this is the next step for your child,” she said. “We know that learning grows and it’s fluid and it’s developmental and so, it’s really important that we know what’s the next step.”
“Every child’s an individual and every child’s next step looks a little bit different.
A few school districts have been using the system since 2016.
“It has become just the natural way of reporting for them,” added Carson. “We’ve taken our time, but we’ve taken our time with reason.”
“We wanted to make sure that they’re making good decisions for our students, and whatever was our decision, we were able to communicate back to the Ministry of Education because we are part of the official pilot.”
More information will go before the board next month, and the pilot will run until June.
Up to this point, school officials have been meeting with teachers and principals to see how many classes might get involved.
Carson says any classroom that wants to be a part of the pilot will be able to get involved.
