While Thompson Rivers University domestic tuition is facing a 2 percent hike, TRU’s Students’ Union says the root of the problem needs to be addressed.
VP External, Cole Hickson says, tuition fees are becoming increasingly unaffordable for the region.
“One of the lesser known stats around it is that 45% of TRU’s revenue comes from tuition dollars, which is far higher than other institutions around B.C.”
Hickson says, their Fund the Future campaign has identified that a lack of funding is the underlying reason why tuition continues to rise.
“And we’ve been really working hard to address this by requesting a full re-evaluation as to how TRU in our region is funded because so far, it’s just not fair.”
On that note, Hickson adds, it’ll be interesting to see what will happen when the provincial budget is announced February 20th.
