Kamloops Mayor Ken Christian has not made up his mind yet about a proposed no go zone for mining around the city but he has concerns about a notice of motion from Councillor Dieter Dudy.
Dudy wants to send a resolution to the Union of B.C. Municipalities and the Southern Interior Local Government Association looking for a ban on mining within 10-kilometre buffer zone around communities to avoid another divisive debate like the proposed KGHM Ajax project.
“New Gold for an example is well within the ten kilometre range and they are great corporate citizens in terms of Kamloops. The impact that they are their employees have on the economy here that goes without saying we want to keep them around. So if there was another New Gold to come by would it be excluded because of the ten kilometre rule? I don’t know.”
Christian also noting a quarry is defined as a mine under current regulations.
The motion will be debated next Tuesday.
