Access to university venues, not a right, but a privilege for secondary school grads in Kamloops.
TRU’s Executive Communications Director, Darshan Lindsay says following last year’s festivities, the university decided to no longer host the grad events like dances and the grand march.
Those events, put on by parent committees, were supposed to be dry.
“There was underage drinking, and then issues related to excessive drinking, whether that was damage to property, and also aggressive behaviour at the venues. So we wanted to make sure that these events were safe, not only for those that were in attendance, but also for our own staff that were supporting the events.”
She says the decision came about last summer in order to give parents enough notice.
Lindsay adding, Thompson Rivers University will still be supporting school sponsored grad celebrations such as banquets and award ceremonies.
