The mayor of Kamloops is not happy to hear the problem of youth homelessness in the city is getting worse not better.
While the final result of the second of its kind count is not out yet one of the main organizers has confirmed the number of homeless youth in the city has increased.
Mayor Ken Christian,
“Terribly disappointing. We see it particularly among that youth population a lot of couch surfing and moving from home to home. Youth that are avoiding being in the care of the ministry. Most disturbingly we see female youth that are finding refuge with men that can be abusive and take advantage of them just for a roof over their head.”
Christian says, it is an awful situation and the city is committed to working with social agencies to find solutions.
The first of its kind youth homelessness count in Kamloops found 129 young people had experienced homelessness, and of those, 56 were on the street during the count.
