It may have been dead and buried for several months – but the federal government has finally weighed in on the Ajax Mine…
If you thought the vultures had long finished picking over the Ajax corpse, the feds have now taken one last peck – rejecting the $1.3-billion dollar copper and gold mine proposal on environmental grounds.
City councillor Donovan Cavers hopes this also buries any lingering accusations opponents were just a bunch of NIMBYs.
“Mining is an important part of our economy but when you have a mine that is that close it is just guaranteed to create problems.”
The provincial government declined approval on environmental grounds. A release from Natural Resources Canada now does the same – saying the decision was based on sound scientific evidence.
