Kamloops is on the way to smashing last years construction record of 224 million dollars worth of building permits issued by the city.
During the first seven months of this year building permit values totalled $158 million up from $104 million over the same time period in 2017, a 51% increase.
City of Kamloops Building and Engineering Development Manager Jason Dixon says out of the total value of building permits issued this year housing construction accounts for $110 million
Dixon says apartment buildings are the big driver.
“I think we are seeing them sort of come to fruition and a lot of activity there. This time last year we had two big permits for apartments for just about $21 million and this year we are at six for over $46 million.”
There have been 629 housing starts, including multi family units, in Kamloops this year compared to only 332 last year.
