The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation is crediting an incredible demand for apartment units in Kamloops for strong housing construction activity.
CMHC’s Len Catling says there has been a minor drop in single detached home starts with 139 starts so far this year compared to 204 at the same point last year. However it is the exact opposite story when it comes to building apartment units in the city.
“What’s really standing out in terms of housing construction is the number of new apartments that are under construction or being started in the Kamloops region. 119 apartments were started just in August of 2018 alone, bringing the year to date total to 486. At this time last year, there were ten apartment starts.”
The new apartment building starts are in addition to the construction of 936 units already underway across the city.
