The mayor of Kamloops expects the novelty of legal marijuana to fade fairly quickly after it is legalized this week.
Ken Christian wants us to take legalized marijuana one step at a time, without trying to solve problems that don’t exist yet.
“By and large, I don’t see that people are going to want to flaunt this,” Christian said. “I don’t see this as a large 4/20 year long celebration. I think it is a novelty.”
He added the city has bylaws dictating where pot can be consumed and where it can’t. As for currently illegal operations he notes the city has some bad operators.
“We have had a few of those where dispensaries have been co-located with residences or they have been next to day cares,” added Christian.
“There have been a large number of complaints and we have had to take action.”
He says provincial cannabis inspectors will be responsible for shutting down illegal operations.
