The City of Kamloops is urging people to have a Green Halloween this year.
City Sustainability Educator Jaimi Garbutt knows the kids want candy.
“Smarties boxes, you can put into your recycling bin,” Garbutt said. “The other wrappers you want to take to General Grants to be recycled at the depots. That can minimize waste going to the landfill.”
“Try to collect as many wrappers, and when you take your bottles to the depot, you can take that in along with Styrofoam and glass, and you’ll minimize a lot of your waste.”
With all the candy, the decorations and the costumes, she notes people generate a lot of waste.
“You can compost your pumpkin, you can roast the seeds, or make a pumpkin pie or a pumpkin soup,” Garbutt added.
Even with decorations, Garbutt notes people could get durable ones that can be used for many years, instead of the disposable ones each year.
