The Western Director of the United Steelworkers feels the policies of US President Donald Trump are getting more play in Canada which causes him great concern.
“We often times say if the U-S sneezes we get a cold. So whatever they do there of course affects us,” Steve Hunt said.
Hunt is among 250 delegates attending a union meeting in Kamloops to talk about current issues and what the future holds for the largest industrial union in Canada.
Hunt says Trumps anti-union policies could spread to Canada.
“What’s happening behind the scenes is he is deregulating everything,” he added. “You know its quiet but they take labour rights away from workers in the united states just puts everybody under pressure.”
“I think some of our politicians are watching very closely.”
Hunt says the Steelworkers have to be on guard for any attempts by provinces across the country to take rights away from union members.
