The mayor of Merritt says new affordable seniors housing planned in the city will be in demand.
Linda Brown says there’s a huge population of seniors who are on fixed incomes.
“I think 40 affordable rental units for seniors in this area is a great step towards having safe, quality housing for some of our seniors,” she said. “So, I think this is a good idea.”
The province is giving $4 million to ASK Wellness to build 40 senior rental units near Merritt’s downtown.
It was part of an announcement by the Horgan government to fund 4,900 rental units, as phase one of a new 10-year rental housing plan.
“We need to increase our housing inventory, we know that,” added Brown. “So any number of affordable housing units would be welcome.”
Brown says no development application for the project in her city has been brought forward as of yet.
