Its a statistic VSA Highways Maintenance of Merritt is applauding on the Coquihalla Highway.
Spokesman Bob Gilowski says during the winter there are usually several cases of cars speeding and running into the back of snow plows.
However, Gilowski says over the past 18 months the company has taken a big step in making its plows more visible, which he hopes will result in fewer accidents.
“We introduced a new lighting package to make our trucks much more visible when you are approaching them from the rear,” he said. “This is important for the Coquihalla Highway because people are approaching our vehicles at a high rate of speed from the rear.”
“Now with the new lighting package, you will be able to see them quicker. They are LED style lighting and they are extremely visible.”
Gilowski also says snow plows are working side by side to clean the road precluding the possibility of cars attempting to pass leading to collisions.
“That means one in the left-hand lane and one in the right close behind,” Gilowski added. “That’s designed to make sure that people are staying back, but also to allow those trucks to clear two lanes at the same time.”
“Then the truck in the left lane can pull over to the right, and allow people to pass when it’s safe to do so.”
