At least one Kamloops Councillor would like more help for the police when it comes to dealing with people with mental illness in 2019.
During a recent budget meeting, Bill Sarai is a big fan of Car 40 which sees a psych nurse respond to calls with regular members.
“You have probably heard more than we have on the campaign and living on the North Shore Car 40,” he said. “I have been hearing that we need like five car 40’s with the partnership with interior health and the mental health nurse that’s on there.”
RCMP Superintendent Syd Leckie would like just another nurse for an additional Car 40.
“Actually we signed an MOU with them moving forward for the next couple of years and try and track our data a little more efficiently to show the results and if that data can show support for them then perhaps interior health will be receptive to additional resources,” he added.
Since October 2012, a mental health nurse and a police officer have been working together to help those in crises around the city.
