The city of Kamloops is trying to figure out what to do with the 50-year-old water system at Noble Creek in Westsyde which services about 36 homes and the Privato winery.
A public meeting will be held tomorrow night, as the city examines the future of the old water system.
It requires major upgrades as future irrigation remains up in the air.
Speaking on the Jim Harrison Show today, Mayor Ken Christian addressed the issue.
“This is largely agricultural and irrigation water that has a historical remembrance out there,” he said. “You know people are not going to be without water, but we got to get our head around these costs.”
“We can’t have the people in Aberdeen subsidizing a separate system.”
Christian added that utilities have to be self-sufficient.
“The Noble Creek System was an old system that was inherited by the city a long time ago,” he added. “The costs of operating it are certainly exceeding what we’re gaining from the residents, so we have to work that through.”
City senior staff are looking at either transferring the water system to its users, sell it or stop using it altogether.
