Police in Kamloops are investigating two threats made to local businesses in the city, asking for money.
There are reports that similar threats were emailed to various businesses across the province, with the unknown sender demanding bitcoin payments.
“We’ve assessed the complaints and we’ve launched an investigation,” said Cpl. Jodi Shelkie.
“Public safety is our top priority and we’ve engaged specialized resources.”
Shelkie adds police are working to determine the how legitimate these threats are.
“The nature of this threat or the businesses involved will not be disclosed, in order to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation,” added Shelkie.
Police departments as far as New York and Calgary have also reported similar threats.
At this time, it appears that these threats are meant to cause disruption and/or obtain money. We’ll respond to each call regarding these emails to conduct a search but we wanted to share this information so the credibility of these threats can be assessed as likely NOT CREDIBLE.

We are currently responding to multiple bomb threats across #YYC. At this time we don’t have any reason to believe they are credible. However, out of an abundance of caution we are treating each as if it is real. We are also aware of similar events occurring across the continent.
