Today’s the day – two big items are going before the Kamloops-Thompson School District board meeting.
The first one is the Facilities Report, which will give trustees an idea of where the growth is, and where the pressure points are.
Board Chair Kathleen Karpuk says their classrooms are not stuffed, but they have caps on the sizes.
“Our challenge is that we don’t have enough classrooms,” she said. “It’s the result of two things.”
“One is the supreme court decision that restored teacher contract language, which had a lot more around students with identified needs and how that affected class sizes. It also is a result of student population growth.”
Most of the challenges, Karpuk notes, are in the City of Kamloops.
The maximum is 30 students in secondary, and 24 for elementary classes, and even lower for kindergarten classes. For specialty classes like chemistry or shop, Karpuk notes they’re limited to the number of workstations they have.
Also up for discussion is trustee remuneration – the last review was eight years ago.
“It doesn’t mean that our remuneration hasn’t gone up, added Karpuk. “It’s just that we haven’t reviewed it as compared to other districts for eight years.”
