It’s another messy day on the Coquihalla Highway between Merritt and Hope, with a winter storm warning in place.
Environment Canada says about 17 cm of snow fell last night, they’re looking for another 30 to 35 cm to fall by tomorrow.
Metereologist Matt MacDonald says it’s a very moist storm system in the area.
“The main front went through early this morning but in its wake, that moisture is just continuing to stream up the Fraser Valley,” he added. “Any time we see that the Coquihalla is in for some heavy snowfall through a prolonged period.”
“That same front is going to make it’s way to Rogers Pass later this afternoon, we’re expecting 15 to 25 cm there through midday Wednesday.”
While snow on the Coquihalla summit in December is nothing unusual, MacDonald adds the multiple storm systems over the last week and a half has been more intense than normal.
He says this won’t be the last storm to contend with on the Coquihalla this week, there’s one more coming on Thursday.
“Probably going to be heavy snow changing to rain because that storm is coming in with quite a bit of heat as well as moisture,” added MacDonald. “So it’ll be another messy day up on the Coquihalla [Thursday] with snow changing to rain.”
“When we get to Friday, that’s when the whole weather pattern starts to ease off.”
MacDonald adds it’s looking like the weekend ahead of Christmas, will make for decent driving conditions through the high mountain passes.
