As Sun Peaks prepares its 2019 budget, property taxes will likely go up for many in the village regardless of what staff and council do.
Mayor Al Raine says he expects most people will see a substantial jump in their property’s assessed value.
Raine says he personally received a letter this week saying his property assessment will be jumping by 56 per cent next year.
“More than likely it’s going to be a 25 to 30 per cent on the 60 per cent of the taxes,” Raine says. “Which means at least a 20 per cent increase on the total tax bill. And that’s pretty significant, people get pretty upset when they get those types of bills.”
Raine says he’s hoping the municipality can keep its tax rate to a 2 per cent increase, which makes up the other 40 per cent of property taxes.
