Another warning from the Better Business Bureau ahead of the holiday season.
They’re reminding people to be wary of subscription traps and deceptive free trials that suck people in.
B-B-B Vice President Simone Lis says they’re seeing an increase in complaints.
“You’re thinking that you’re going to get a free sample by paying a few dollars for shipping or handling,” she said. “And what happens is that when you buy the product, you might find out that you actually only have 14 days to return it, and then they charge you.”
“And the other piece of course, the subscription trap, is that you’ve signed up for something that continues to make charges and you continue to receive the product.”
Lis adds that before buying things online for an unknown site, you should try and make sure if the company is one you can trust.
“Social media is a great place to find information,” she noted. “I mean it’s very easy for it to look like your friends might be recommending or referring something.”
“So what I would suggest is to take a step back, do your research, whether or not they’re a business you can trust.”
Another thing to be wary of is celebrity endorsements – Lis says a lot of times they are fake.
