City of Kamloops bylaws officers continue to face some challenges in doing their job especially with an increasing amount of social issues.
Community Safety and Enforcement Manager John Ramsey says bylaw officers are seeing an increase in interactions with vagrants.
“When we are talking about the social issues we are talking about the panhandling, we are talking about the transient camps, we are talking about the nuisance behaviours that you see on the street. People assume they are violent and dangerous and I am not going to say that some of them are not but what I will say is when you are interacting with them they are unpredictable.”
As for what to do about it Ramsey says the city has to continue to build on what it has already done on the social front.
He says that includes addressing affordable housing and building relationships with social agencies in the city.
Editors Note: Angelo Iacobucci passed away December 14th. While we work through our tremendous loss he continues to be a big part of Radio NL as he always will be. We have found a folder of almost 30 stories he had prepared for the holiday season. This is one of them.
