City crews in Kamloops are busy today clearing roads after the first significant snowfall of the season.
Streets and environmental services manager Glen Farrow says about a dozen city staffers have put in shifts between 14 and 16 hours long clearing snow and ice.
“We really ramped up staffing-wise around noon yesterday, and that continued all the way through the night with our regular graveyard shift coming in at midnight, and then continuing today.”
Farrow says it typically takes about 36 hours to clear out roads after a significant snowfall ends, and adds artery routes and collector and bus routes are all in good shape at this point.
“We’re moving into local roads, clearing cul-de-sac vaults, clearing locals in the higher elevations where there’s more snow and where they’re on hills, where there’s a greater risk of slipping and that kind of thing.”
Farrow says city crews have access to more operators to clear snow on weekends and holidays this season.
He adds the city also has extendable blades for trucks meaning they can make fewer passes to clear streets and sidewalks.
