The leader of the BC Green Party seems to be taking a realistic approach as the province pledges by 2040 all new car sales will only be zero emission vehicles.
Speaking on NL’s Inside #bcpoli Andrew Weaver says the promise is more easily achieved in big urban centers than it is in rural B.C. where people drive long distances or need big polluting vehicles for things like farm work.
“What a zero emission vehicle standard means is that if you are going to sell new cars in British Columbia a percentage, which is prescribed through regulation or act, must be zero emitting. So you can imagine that the dealers like the Nissans, the Fords, and the GMs they will sell their electric vehicles but they are likely not going to sell them in 100 Mile House. They will probably sell them in Victoria and Vancouver where there is really no need for anything other than an electric vehicle because the range is not an issue.”
Weaver says while the tractor won’t go by the wayside anytime soon electric vehicle sales will continue to build as the charging infrastructure also grows.
As for big commercial trucks he anticipates a move to bio-diesel to address emissions.
