It appears Kamloops snow removal costs for 2018 have crept over budget, but that likely won’t mean any extra costs for taxpayers.
Streets and environmental services manager Glen Farrow says the city is likely at least $100,000 dollars over its snow budget of $1.6 million.
However, he says snow removal is under the same umbrella as the overall streets budget which he doesn’t expect will be over budget.
Farrow says the intangible in the snow-removal budget is mother nature.
“It’s really about aligning with those service levels, hitting those council-approved service levels. That’s more of a focus, more of a priority than aligning with our budget.”
He points out most snow removal work happened early in the calendar year.
“We did have a very challenging early 2018, so January through April a lot of heavy events. Hauling a lot of snow out of the business districts downtown and on the North Shore. So at this point, we have exhausted our full 2018 budget.”
He adds the mild start to this winter has meant city crews have been working more on street sweeping and asphalt repairs.
