The mayor of Clearwater is raising concerns on a dangerous section of the Yellowhead Highway.
Merlin Blackwell points out last weekend’s truck crash into the North Thompson River near Avola was the second time that has happened in the past two years.
In both cases, the truck spilled diesel into the river and compromised water supply for Vavenby further south.
“Now that there’s been two accidents, similar accidents on that stretch of road, I’m quite sure that the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is going to be looking at whether or not barriers need to be put up on that stretch of road,” Blackwell says.
“The cost of cleaning this up, versus the cost of a couple hundred metres worth of cement barriers to stop it from happening again, I think that’s a pretty good cost-value analysis to say ‘hey, we probably need barriers on that section of road,’ now that its happened twice.”
Highway cameras show the highway was blanketed in compact snow when the recent crash happened, although the cause is still being investigated.
