The idea of a performing arts centre in downtown Kamloops will be raised again, this time by philanthropist Ron Fawcett, at tomorrow’s council meeting.
Mayor Ken Christian does not know what Fawcett will present to council but he called him a strong proponent of the performing arts centre idea.
While the idea was last rejected in a referendum, Christian says there are a few ways it could still come to fruition.
“We have to wait and see what is proposed but there are a number of different mechanisms. You could have a lease to own, you could have a referendum, you could have a reverse petition. There is a number of different ways that we could raise the funds for that,” he says.
“This is not something that is going to happen over the next few months that is for sure. Any kind of a journey of 100 miles starts with a first step and this will be a first step.”
Christian says his mandate is that the arts community be united and take the lead about what ever concept might be tabled, including what the performing arts centre would look like, how big it would be, and its location.
