Where there is smoke there might be fire.
B.C.’s Attorney General is declining to comment on allegations made by the two Liberal Kamloops MLAs that the BC Lottery Corporation headquarters project might be in trouble.
In fact the Attorney General’s office refused to even provide any assurance things were on track only saying they would release something when they could.
Kamloops Mayor Ken Christian says he hasn’t heard of any troubles.
“I spoke with Minister Eby in the summer and he assured me at that time that Kamloops was going to be the headquarters of the BC Lottery Corporation and there was going to be a new building because they are outgrowing the one that they are in.”
Christian notes the BCLC rebuild, if it is on track, might play an important role on dealing with an aging piece of infrastructure.
“I’m glad you raised it, because in council we received a report from our finance division about asset management and one of the things that they told us is that City Hall in Kamloops is pretty much outlived it’s lifespan.”
Christian says he would like to see if the city can work with BCLC on options to replace City Hall.
“We are either going to be looking at some major expenses there in terms of making that usable and keeping it going or else looking at a tear down. It makes me think the next time I see Jim Lightbody I want to talk to him about the plans for that whole corner and whether or not there would be the potential for them to overbuild and lease back space to us.”
Last week MLAs Todd Stone and Peter Milobar say they are being told the estimated $50 million project to rebuild the downtown Kamloops BCLC headquarters was in some kind of jeopardy.
