Sun Peaks has a big project planned to keep up with water supply needs.
The municipality is asking for just under $5.9 million to help fund a new reservoir, which would cover about three-quarters of the project’s overall cost.
“This is really an extension of what we’ve been doing for the surface water supply,” mayor Al Raine says.
Once it’s built, the new reservoir would be used for snow making, while the current reservoir for snow-making would be turned over to the municipality.
He adds the village’s water system is nearing capacity and it’s important to keep ahead of development.
“What we’re hoping to do is, longer term, may have a bigger surface reservoir high up on the mountain. And then we’ll bring a new line in and we’ll put a reservoir high enough that it will be above all of the development at Sun Peaks, so it’ll be a longer system, Raine says.
“That would be a bigger reservoir and from there we can always allow water to cascade down from other reservoirs.”
The project’s total cost is $8 million dollars and Raine says Sun Peaks has already committed more than $2 million for the reservoir, noting something would still get built if the grant isn’t successful.
“I think it certainly would slow us down a little bit and there’s a few things we probably could do but we would spend less money for sure.”
