At least one option to replace an aging Kamloops City Hall was wiped off the table with the sudden scrapping of the downtown BC Lottery Corporation headquarters.
Mayor Ken Christian had hoped that there would be some symmetry to perhaps build a new city hall with the redevelopment of the old headquarters footprint, but that is now off the table.
Christian says the city will now have to go it alone in tackling the replacement of the 53-year-old structure.
“We are looking at some more detailed estimates from our asset management group,” Christian said. “We are looking at a choice that council will have to make, not this year but down the road, between investing $9 to $12-million in terms of renovations in that building or looking at seeking an alternative location.”
The aging city hall – determined to be near the end of its lifespan – was used as a prime example of city infrastructure getting older with each passing year.
Christian notes the need to replace the building is not urgent.
