The use of e-cigarettes by teenagers is a cause of concern for the Canadian Cancer Society.
While they say it’s less harmful than conventional cigarettes, Jenny Byford, the Advocacy Lead for British Columbia, is sounding the alarm.
“There have been recent studies in the last year that have found that teenagers using e-cigarettes then turn to using tobacco later on,” she said. “And so that’s a concerning trend.”
As far as the Canadian Cancer Society is concerned, e-cigarettes are less harmful than conventional cigarettes.
However, she adds that doesn’t mean that there’s no harm in using e-cigarettes.
“If e-cigarettes can help smokers stay off traditional cigarettes that’s great,” Byford added. “It’s better from a health perspective to use e-cigarettes than tobacco in the long term basis, if needed.”
Byford does mention that the best approach from a health perspective is for people is to quit smoking altogether.
