With four robberies now in downtown Kamloops, one city councillor is calling them crimes of opportunity.
Dennis Walsh owns the Movie Mart, which was robbed twice – first on January 10 and then on January 19, and while speaking on the NL Morning News, he admitted the robberies are unsettling.
However, Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says it’s hard to say if they were all crimes of opportunity.
“In some of these situations, they’ve had a balaclava on, and they’ve had a knife. In this situation, they [also] had a hammer,” she said, speaking after the McCleaners on Seymour Street was robbed on January 28. “So, it took some preplanning to have the appropriate covering for the face, and to have a weapon with them.”
“I don’t know how spontaneous it happened.”
Walsh added that Kamloops is a safe city, adding he thinks the people responsible are passing through the Tournament Capital.
“No, I can’t speculate on whether the person is transient or passing through town,” Shelkie added when asked about that statement. “At this time, we don’t have an identification of the suspect, so I can’t say what their living conditions are.”
Also this month, the Whispers Adult Superstore on Seymour Street was robbed on January 20.
Police continue to investigate all four robberies, and at this point say there’s nothing to link them.
