The Sun Peaks Health Centre appears to be taking pressure off of clinics in Kamloops.
The clinic had 546 appointments in December according to a report brought to Sun Peak council, which includes no-shows and cancellations.
Sun Peaks chief administrative officer Rob Bremner says the clinic is currently running with the equivalent of two full time doctors.
“I don’t know that it’s overly surprising. I mean we knew that we’ve been very, very busy. In later December, we’ve actually began to be open seven days a week over the rest of the ski season. So it doesn’t surprise me that we’re really busy.”
Bremner adds the clinic has been picking up patients who live in Kamloops who don’t have a family doctor.
“We’ve been trying to take those postal codes that kind of have relevance to Sun Peaks and trying to pluck those off the 811 list from the province. So we’ve been pretty successful in bringing a number of them in and giving them a medical home,” he says.
“Knowing that we have a small population in the summer and that our growth is significant in the winter, we’ve always anticipated that we would be able to take and alleviate some of the pressures off of Kamloops with our operation.”
Last year was the first full year of operation for the clinic in Sun Peaks.
