Two more private cannabis retail stores are on the horizon in Kamloops.
City council supported applications Tuesday for stores on Lansdowne Street and Tranquille Road.
Some concerns were raised on the number of pot shops planned on Tranquille Road, but Councillor Dieter Dudy says it’s not the city’s job to dictate businesses that can or can’t operate.
“I know there’s a very real concern when it comes to clustering, that we may get too much of one thing in an area,” he said. “But having been in business for the better part of my life, I also recognize that quite often whether it’s bookstores, whether it’s retail liquor stores, whether it’s cannabis stores, eventually the market is only going to support the amount that it can.”
Dudy says the City may see six stores on Tranquille for a period of time, before finding that it’s not economically feasible in the future.
“Particularly if people fall within the realm of the rules being passed on with respect to where they can locate, I’m not sure it’s up to us to dictate how many stores we have,” he added. “But rather give them an opportunity to shine.”
“If all six shine you know there’s going to be a demand for it. If there’s no demand, then you know that it’s going to be reduced in time.”
Kamloops City Council has now supported applications for nine cannabis retail stores.
