After a warm and dry January, it’s a cold start to February in Kamloops.
Environment Canada is calling for a high of just -14 today with lows of -18 tonight and tomorrow, that’s before the windchill is factored in.
Meteorologist Bobby Sekhon says we can expect a bit of a cooling trend.
“It’s expected to continue for at least a week as we get into next weekend,” he said. “It’s expected to be El Nino winter this year, which means milder temperatures.”
“However, these types of arctic outbreaks can still occur where we still get maybe a week or two of colder arctic air settling in place, before things rebound.”
He does note that things will warm up a little bit by the middle of the week.
“However, temperatures will still remain below normal,” Sekhon added. “They will rebound a little bit from what they have been the last couple of nights.”
Environment Canada is calling for a low of -14 on Wednesday night, and -9 on Thursday, with snowfall expected.
The normal high for February 4 is 2 degrees, while the low is around -5 degrees.
Sekhon adds there is the risk of frostbite for the next couple of days because of the cold temperatures.
He’s urging people to take precautions if they’re travelling, to make sure their vehicles are well equipped for the conditions, and to dress warmly if you have to be outside, especially for long periods of time.
