Freezing temperatures in Kamloops aren’t going anywhere just yet, and nor is the demand at shelter spaces.
The Mustard Seed on Victoria Street West has been as busy in the past week as it has since it opened on Jan. 1, according to managing director Diane Down.
“There’s up to 50 people staying overnight in our building, even though 30, or under 30, are actually accessing the mats to sleep. There’s obviously still a need just for shelter.”
Down says about 20 people have visited the Outreach Room each night at the shelter.
“We’ve got tables and chairs and we’ve got coffee, so we’re asking them not to actually camp out on the floor… So they’re up, and they’re in and out. We’re just happy to offer a space that’s flexible that can take care of folks wherever they’re at.”
Down says most of the homeless population in Kamloops has a place to stay overnight right now but some are choosing not to use shelter spaces.
“Most folks are getting indoors, I would still say though there are obviously still folks who are entrenched in that who find it difficult to come indoors.”
