Kamloops City Councillors might be considering a revision to the cannabis retail zoning bylaw.
It’s after one store was rejected this week, given it’s proposed location next to a Family Support Centre.
Councillor Bill Sarai thinks stores should be kept away from daycares and places frequented by kids and youth.
“We have schools involved, but I think we need to expand that, and I’m hoping that as a council we can somehow clarify this because I think maybe it wasn’t foreseen,” he said. “We’re including cannabis stores where they shouldn’t be in my opinion.”
Councillor Sadie Hunter added it’s clear they’ll have some thinking to do.
“In theory, the 100 metre from door to door sounded good, but I think in practice what we’re seeing now is that there might be some other things that we need to consider,” she added.
“We want businesses to invest in Kamloops, but if we’re addressing them one at a time as they come in, based on these other considerations, then it might cause uncertainty, and of course, we want businesses to have that certainty when they’re looking at investing in the city.”
The rejected application was made by Ian Burak who was also approved for another licence downtown.
Hunter isn’t sure if he’ll reapply for ths store at another location.
Currently, bylaws require cannabis stores be 150 metres from schools and 100 metres from other cannabis stores.
