The MLA for Kamloops North has a few items he will be keeping an eye on when today’s provincial budget is tabled.
Peter Milobar says locally in Kamloops he will be watching to see if badly needed funding for capital projects will be there for the school district.
“Well obviously there will be a heavy look towards the school capital side of things,” he said. “There was a bit of delay where they asked the school to look at the value between a new build and a renovation on Valleyview.”
“It sounds like things are pushing back towards the renovation. Hopefully, there is no further delay in reports needed by the minister to come to a decision.”
Milobar says, as opposition environment critic, he will be looking to see if there are any dollars for the CleanBC program championed by Jobs minister Bruce Ralston.
He says with carbon tax creeping up he also wants to see incentives for homeowners to help them with retrofitting projects.
The MLA for Kamloops South meanwhile is hoping today’s provincial budget will provide funding to literally allow the rubber to hit the road.
Todd Stone says the NDP were elected with promises to accelerate the four laning of the Highway One east of Kamloops to the Alberta border.
“The complete opposite is what we have actually seen 18 months in and work has stopped,” he said, in an interview. “We had $200 million approved for four laning from Hoffman’s Bluff right through to the other side of Chase. That project is at least two years behind schedule.”
“We are told it may go to tender this year. They can’t even say if it will be this spring or this coming fall. So that is very very disappointing.”
Stone says when the four laning gets underway costs will increase due to the union only mandate in the Community Benefits Agreement.
But he adds the number one capital concern in the budget is for new schools to address the need in School District 73.
