B.C.’s Health Minister says steps are being considered to deal with a measles outbreak in the Lower Mainland.
However, Adrian Dix is ruling out an outright ban on allowing those who refuse to vaccinate from attending things like public schools.
“First of all, we don’t have mandatory vaccines anywhere in Canada,” he said. “We have rules in place in Ontario and New Brunswick that really what they are is mandatory registrations.”
“You have to show to get into school or show a reason why not and whether one of the exemptions apply.”
Dix says they’re considering a program like that here.
He says the current outbreak is an opportunity for people to get themselves and their children vaccinated, noting that even one case is considered an outbreak.
Dix recalled the 2014 measles outbreak in the Fraser Valley, which he says is now one of the most vaccinated areas of the province.
