If you’re heading towards the Lower Mainland this weekend, there’s an avalanche warning for recreational backcountry users in the Coastal mountains.
Avalanche Canada says the warning will last until Sunday night.
Forecaster James Floyer says these conditions are unusual for that area.
“Typically we’ll see avalanches stop fairly soon after storms on the Coast Mountain ranges and at this time the snowpack is quite touchy, it’s quite reactive to human triggering,” he said.
“The places where it’s most reactive that we’ve noted is around treeline elevation.”
In the mountains near Kamloops, the risk of an avalanche is moderate this weekend.
“In the North and South Columbias, either side of Kamloops, not quite at the same level of touchiness and concern,” Floyer added.
“Having said that, safe travel on the mountain still relies on selecting good slopes that are not likely to avalanche.”
The warning this weekend is also in place for parts of Vancouver Island.
Avalanche Canada also released some videos of recent snowpack tests as part of the investigation into the recent fatal avalanche on Runner Peak. You can view them before.
