Applications from two more businesses looking to open cannabis stores in Kamloops will be at city council today.
One application is for a sales license to the province seeking council’s support, which is for a store downtown at 231 4th Avenue.
Director of development services Marvin Kwiatkowski points out that will be the 15th cannabis store license to come before council; to date, council has supported 13 of 14 licenses.
“That’s our fifth one in the downtown, council has already approved four. At this point in time none of the other ones are open. But this application does meet requirements of at least 100 metres from the nearest store, this one’s 108 metres,” Kwiatkowski says.
Another application is from a business looking to open a store downtown at 234 Victoria Street, asking the city to reduce its minimum separation between cannabis stores from 100 metres to 94 metres, as it is looking to open its store 94 metres from where one retail cannabis store is already planned to open, at 240 Lansdowne Street.
Staff though are recommending council deny that application.
“At this point in time, it’s for a development variance permit. So it’s not for the actual license itself it’s just to vary the bylaw, so that’s a slight difference in this application,” Kwiatkowski says.
