The mayor of Kamloops says the clock is ticking on getting a deal done with the province to share legal cannabis revenues.
With the city already incurring costs to set up the infrastructure for legalization, Ken Christian was asked how long Kamloops could go without a deal before passing those costs on to local taxpayers.
“That would probably be next year,” he said. “I think that the costs that we have are incremental within our development, engineering, and sustainability division.”
“So we have got staff focused on these files and they are not doing other work. As a result, the bills keep mounting and the revenue is a big goose egg at this point.”
Christian is urging the Union of BC Municipalities and the province to “get on with it.”
He says there are some other issues to deal with including challenges with the supply of legal cannabis, but those issues should be dealt with and a revenue-sharing deal reached.
