As the province and Union of B.C. Municipalities work on reaching a legal cannabis revenue sharing agreement on sales tax, they will have to deal with some wrinkles.
One of the questions already being asked is whether municipalities who chose not to have any legal cannabis stores get the same amount of revenue as those who do.
Kamloops mayor Ken Christian says it is the gas tax argument all over again.
“Whether those councils decide to get involved in the operation of retail sales or not is there business. But we do have built into our system some revenue that comes from our business licencing.”
UBCM president Arjun Singh weighed in on the topic as well.
“Richmond has said no stores for the time being. Vancouver has been all in for a long time. But those impacts transcend municipal boundaries sometimes. In that sense there is an argument to be made for every local government in the province to have some revenue share. I think the discussion about what the formula is going to be is one we have to have still.”
Singh suggests there should be a floor amount of revenue dollars available to all local governments.
