If you thought February was colder than normal, you’re not wrong.
Environment Canada says this past month was the fifth coldest since they began keeping records in 1891 – and the coldest since 1936 when the average temperature was -15 C.
“This year, Kamloops came in about 8.5 C below the normal temperatures,” said Carmen Hartt. “The mean temperature for Kamloops for the month of February was -8.6 C.”
The normal February temperature in Kamloops is around 0 C.
“The seasonal forecasts are hard to predict,” she added. ” It looks like what happened this year was a really persistent arctic ridge of high pressure that settled in and brought us that cold weather.”
“That just stuck around, and that has happened at others times in other years.”
Looking ahead to March, temperatures are still expected to be a few degrees below normal.
“As we move through the first week and to the middle of the month, we will see some temps near normal,” Hartt said. “Normal for March is a high of 11 C, and low near 0 C. It may be the middle of the month we’ll be back to that regime.”
While Kamloops didn’t break any records last month, Vancouver had the coldest February on record with a mean temperature at 0.4 C, while the normal is 4.9 C.
