Kamloops city staff have been asked to look at potentially changing times for council meetings.
A motion on the topic brought forward by councillor Dale Bass was passed at yesterday’s council meeting.
“There was a fair amount of discussion about the fact that no one will come anyhow. My argument back was, we have to do what we can to make it as easy as possible for most people who want to come to actually be able to come. Whether they do or not is just part of democracy.”
Bass says the report is expected to be back in late June.
“Administration is apparently going to do a much more in-depth review of the request than I had anticipated, which means they’re going to be contacting the communities I mentioned in the motion for that, and trying to get a fair amount more engagement on it. There may even be public consultation.”
Bass says that afternoon meetings can be hard to attend for people with daytime jobs, and says many other municipalities do evening council meetings.
She says she nor anyone else on council is married to any particular time that meetings should be moved to if they were.
“There was some discussion about possibly starting meetings at say 3:30, rather than 1:30. And I clarified, I threw out evening but it could be anything. Whatever, look at it. See if we can move it to something that is much more amenable for the majority of people who might want to come to be able to come.”
