Cannabis stores might seem like a novelty right now, but Mayor Ken Christian thinks that won’t be the case next year.
Another retail cannabis store was approved by Kamloops city council this week, bringing their total to 15 potential stores.
Mayor Ken Christian believes the city will eventually even out at 10 stores when all is said and done.
“I think we have enough in the downtown and on the North Shore,” he said, speaking on the Woodford Show. “I think we’re probably able to accommodate one in Brock and one in Westsyde, probably another one or two up in the Sahali or Aberdeen area, and then I think we’re done.”
Christian added it’s the market and not Kamloops city council that will eventually decide how many stores open up in the Tournament Capital.
“I think what’s really happening is a lot of people are kind of hedging their bets on legalization of edibles,” he noted. “And as that becomes available, then you’re going to see craft cannabis kinds of products out there.”
There is just the one cannabis store operating in Kamloops, although some of the private stores are believed to be close to opening.
