UPDATE 10:35 AM –
Police in Kamloops confirm that last night’s fire at the Tournament Inn in Valleyview was likely human-caused.
Three units were damaged and the fire appears to have been started outside the building on the northeast end of the hotel.
Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says they seized exhibits at what appears to be the point of origin of the fire, and that’s been sent for analysis.
“We do believe it’s human-caused, whether it’s arson or not we have to wait for our analysis to come back from the lab,” she said. “So in the future, we’ll have a better determination if it’s suspicious.”
“From there, our investigation can lead us to whether it was targeted.”
Shelkie notes that the process could take between six to eighteen months.
Police are asking if anyone has any information to give them a call.

ORIGINAL 4:53 AM –
There were no injuries after a suspicious fire at the Tournament Inn in Valleyview last night.
However, four people had to be evacuated from the motel last night, after crews were called around 8:40 PM.
Platoon Captain Darryl Cooper says two rooms at the motel were engulfed when crews got there.
“It was pretty large, it was fairly impressive from the outside,” said Platoon Captain Darryl Cooper. “The flames were pretty big.”
“[However,] it was a standard fire for us to fight. It was all hands on deck for the first little bit to get it under control, but once we had it confined, it was a matter of getting in and mopping that up.”
One of the two rooms engulfed was empty, the other had two people in there who weren’t able to return to their room.
Two other people were displaced from another unaffected room.
“They’ll probably be able to go back in today,” said Cooper. “We wanted them out of there for the night while we were investigating the fire and making sure everything was under control.”
Cooper adds at this point the early investigation leads them to believe that the fire was human-caused.
The RCMP are investigating.
