A second stint this year in Kamloops for the Uniform Gang Enforcement Team resulted in another large seizure of drugs, weapons and cash.
UGET, made up of members of Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of B.C. based in the Lower Mainland, spent nine days in Kamloops last month as they continue to crack down on local gang violence.
Members seized “a variety of substances” believed to be fentanyl, crack cocaine and methamphetamine, as well as 19 potential weapons including knives, brass knuckles, bear spray and a replica .357 magnum pellet gun. Further, members also seized $48,000 dollars in cash believe to be linked to the drug trade.
The seizures were made after 144 vehicles were stopped and 173 people were checked over those nine days. Several people were also arrested on outstanding warrants.
“Providing operational, overt suppression and disruption support of gang violence to Kamloops RCMP is an example of the integral role of our UGET officers in fulfilling the CFSEU-BC mandate and commitment to the communities of BC,” CFSEU-BC media relations officer Sgt. Brenda Winpenny says.
The massive seizure comes after UGET seized a large amount of weapons, drugs and cash over four days in Kamloops in January. The gang enforcement team arrived in January after two fatal shootings at Kamloops hotels on Jan. 23, and returned weeks later following an armed robbery and kidnapping and another fatal shooting on back-to-back days, on Feb. 14 and 15.
Kamloops RCMP Supt. Syd Lecky says the UGET team isn’t currently in Kamloops, but he says we “will likely see them again.”
“When and where, that I probably won’t share until they’re here, because you’ll know when they are. But they’re always available for us to reach out to as needed, and if we think there’s a need then we’ll certainly reach out to them and other units for their support.”
